Flipkart to shut down Flyte MP3 store on June 17

Flipkart is sending out mails to its subscribers informing that it is all set to shut the digital music service on Flyte, which recently turned one year old. The news was first reported by NextBigWhat, according to whom the company plans to step back for now and revisit the digital music market opportunity at a later stage.

The company has made it official by sending mails stating that “the Flyte MP3 store will no longer be operational after June 17, 2013”.Flipkart has notified its subscribers about the sudden shut down of the store and informed that in case they are not able to use their Flyte Wallet the company will refund the unused balance. Also, those interested in purchasing music can do so before the service is taken off, however these music files will be available for download in the digital library till August 18.

The Flyte store will continue selling e-books.Flipkart launched the Flyte MP3 store as its own music store from where one could buy music from a number of genres and categories including Bollywood and International Hits. In fact it celebrated its first anniversary in February this year by offering over 100 music albums for free for a week.Reportedly, the company’s head of digital media and payments, Mekin Maheshwari has revealed that they are shutting this service due to problems like music piracy and micro-payments, which is hindering their growth, and feels that they would reenter once the prevailing condition improves.
