While Microsoft has left Indian gamers in the dark and plans on launching the Xbox One in late 2014, looks like Sony is going to be the Indian gamers saviour as it plans to launch the PlayStation 4 (PS4) in 2013 itself. In an interview with IVG, Atindriya Bose, Sony’s country manager for the PlayStation confirmed that the PS4 launch will be matched with the European launch which is slated for the holiday season of 2013.
He said “It will be matched with the European launch; give or take a bit to account for Indian logistics. The consoles have to be shipped in advance, and currently all consoles also require certification for the India market. In terms of targeting, we’re looking to synchronise with the European launch,” and then clarified “That’s this year.”
He pointed out that even the PlayStation Vita was launched in India soon after the US and European launch and at maximum, it will be delayed by a month unless there was a certification issue. Notably, at the moment even Sony’s home market, Japan, does not have a scheduled launch date for the PlayStation 4, but it is increasingly becoming clear that even Japan will receive the PlayStation 4 this year.
If Sony manages to launch the PS4 in 2013 in India and Microsoft sticks to its guns and launches the Xbox One late in 2014, it will give the PS4 a massive head-start, which will ruin all the momentum enjoyed by the Xbox 360 in the country. Additionally, the PS4 is also expected to be cheaper than the Xbox One and the price will also have a major factor in the decision making process.
We have reached out to Sony India for a comment on the situation and will update the post as soon as we receive word on the same.
