Nokia Normandy leaks online, reported to be the first Android device by Nokia

image

There were rumours, a long time ago, that Nokia is making an Android phone. It seems that the rumour is true.
The Verge cites sources familiar with Nokia’s plans as saying that the Finnish handset maker has been working on its first Android phone, codenamed Normandy, and that it is expected to be launched in 2014. Interestingly, the report reveals that Nokia, following the lead of Amazon, is working on a fully-tailored or forked version of Android, like the software on the online retail giant’s Kindle Fire tablet range.
The rumoured Nokia Normandy smartphone is said to be targeted at the low-cost segment as an Asha-equivalent smartphone, but with access to more traditional smartphone apps – a benefit that the report suggests has been missing in Nokia’s dated Series 40-based Asha phones. Further, the report describes the Nokia Normandy efforts as ‘full steam ahead’.
Unfortunately, there is no word on the innards of the alleged Nokia Normandy. Earlier, the serial phone tipster, @evleaks revealed the rumoured Nokia Normandy in a render, saying, “A real Asha. Or Lumia? The Nokia Normandy.”
Contradicting the rumours about a Nokia Android phone, Stephen Elop, the former CEO of Nokia had said in July that the company made the right decision by choosing Windows Phone over Android. As of now, there is no clarity whether the alleged Nokia Normandy Android phone is true or just a rumour.
It would be interesting to see if Nokia can release its rumoured Android phone ahead of the completion of the Microsoft deal.

Nexus 5 specs leaked again online

image

The new Nexus 5 has been leaking all over the place over the past few months as photos, videos, specs and more continue to trickle out. The picture being painted, as you well know by now, is very impressive. The Nexus 5 is shaping up to be a sleek, cutting-edge smartphone with a shockingly low price tag. Where “cutting-edge” is concerned, if you didn’t believe all of the specs laid out in the LG service manual then perhaps an official page from WIND Mobile will convince you.

Since Nexus 5 details hadn’t leaked enough already, Canadian carrier WIND Mobile recently posted the above to a pre-registration post on its Facebook page before deleting it soon after. Not that any of this had been a mystery, but the page confirms that Nexus 5 specs include a 4.95-inch full HD display, a quad-core 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, an 8-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization, 16GB or 32GB of storage, 2GB of RAM, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/nc, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 and Google’s new Android 4.4 KitKat operating system.

An earlier Google blunder revealed that the Nexus 5 will start at just $349 for the 16GB with no service contract, likely making the Nexus 5 the only smartphone Android enthusiasts should care about this holiday season — if Google can manage to build enough of them to meet demand, that is.

Snapdragon APQ8084 SOC spotted on Antutu with, clocked at 2.5GHz with Adreno 420

image

Qualcomm’s powerful Snapdragon 800 processor has only just started arriving on premium flagship devices, but the ARM chip manufacturer seems to have already readied its successor. German weblog MobileGeeks has spotted a new Qualcomm Snapdragon chip on AnTuTu with model number APQ8084.

From the screenshot, the new Snapdragon SoC seems like an incremental upgrade from the Snapdragon 800. Many things like resolutions and number of cores supported remain the same, but it is the clock speed and the GPU where we see the upgrades. Snapdragon 800 supports clock speeds up to 2.3GHz and supports Adreno 320 GPU. This forthcoming chipset seems to support clock speeds up to 2.5GHz and Adreno 420 on the graphics side.

White Nexus 5 caught on the web

image

It seems that Google might be planning to launch a white variant of the Nexus 5 as well after a black variant as seen in previous leaks. GadgetOx has spotted a picture on the Chinese website Weibo which seems to be a press render of the upcoming smartphone.

On the features side, the recent hands-on video of the Nexus 5 gave us a good virtual look at the phone as well as its features. Just to recall, the phone will come equipped with a 4.95-inch IPS TFT display, 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 processor with 2GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel camera with OIS, 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera and a 2,300mAh battery with support for wireless charging. It will most likely be available in 16GB or 32GB variants with no option to expand its battery, and with price starting from at $349 (Rs 21,400 approximately) for the 16GB variant, as teased by Google recently. The phone would also support NFC and LTE.

Though there is no word yet on it’s launch, but we can expect it to be announced by Google on October 31 alongside the Nexus Smartwatch.
